5 Things You Should Know About Heartburn

First things first: Heartburn has nothing to do with your heart. It’s actually an irritation that occurs when your stomach produces too much acid during digestion and backs up into your esophagus (ouch).

Whether or not it’s your first time experiencing occasional heartburn, knowing what causes heartburn symptoms — and how to prevent them — can help you take control. Here are 5 things you should know.

The most common heartburn symptoms are:

    • Burning and discomfort behind the breastbone
    • Burning sensation in the throat
    • Sour or bitter taste in the mouth
    • Small amounts of stomach contents rising back up into your throat
    • Sleep disruption, especially if you’ve eaten within 2 hours of going to bed

Severe heartburn symptoms may feel like a heart attack. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Common food and beverage triggers include:
    • Coffee (regular and decaffeinated) and other drinks that contain caffeine
    • Carbonated drinks
    • Fatty, greasy and fried foods
    • Vinegar
    • Chocolate
    • Spicy food
    • Peppermint
    • Alcohol, particularly red wine
    • Certain vegetables including raw onions, garlic, peppers and tomatoes
    • Certain fruits and products like lemons, grapefruit, oranges and orange juice

There are other triggers that can bring on your heartburn symptoms. Learn what they are now.

Change is good, and these Do’s and Don’ts can help you take control of your heartburn, instead of being controlled by it.

    DO:

    • Eat slowly and enjoy smaller meals throughout the day
    • Avoid foods and beverages that tend to trigger heartburn like those that are fatty, fried or highly acidic
    • Enjoy low-acidic foods such as oatmeal, bread, rice, bananas and melons, green vegetables and lean proteins
    • Raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches or sleep with a pillow wedge

    DON’T:

    • Lie down or bend over soon after eating
    • Eat 2-3 hours before bedtime
    • Eat big meals
    • Exercise right after eating

Options are good. And there are a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) heartburn relief options available which generally fall into three categories:

    • Antacids: They neutralize stomach acid to provide heartburn relief, as well as relieve acid indigestion and sour stomach. Antacids are taken when symptoms occur.
    • H2 Blockers (Histamine 2 blockers): These medications block a type of histamine receptor that stimulates acid production in the stomach, reducing the excess acid that causes heartburn. Zantac 360°® OTC is formulated with famotidine, an H2 blocker, and can be taken before you eat to prevent heartburn, or after to relieve it, giving you flexibility in how you manage heartburn.
    • PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors): PPIs reduce the excess acid that causes conditions like frequent heartburn and GERD. They work by inhibiting or stopping the secretion of acid in the stomach from the “proton pump,” a molecule present in stomach cells which “pump” acid into the stomach. They are taken before eating breakfast in the morning, once a day for 14 days.

Compare the benefits and differences to see how they work differently to help you manage heartburn.
